The girl was shot while playing in the parking lot of a Woodbridge apartment complex on Gatehouse Terrace when a group of men walking nearby got into an argument, Prince William County police said at the time. Video of the shooting shows the girl dashing for cover when she is hit by a stray bullet. As she falls to the ground, reports said, she screams out, "I can't feel my legs, I can't feel my legs."
Her mother, Brooklin Freeman, posted an update to a GoFundMe on Tuesday, June 14, that the girl has regained some motion in her legs and has recovered enough that doctors released her from the Intensive Care Unit.
She has made it out of ICU. The doctors are still monitoring her pain and the fluid in her abdomen. She has begun to start moving her legs which is a blessing. She is in good spirit and very determined to get better each day. She is starting to move her legs a little more each day with the help of her physical therapy. It is truly a blessing and she could not have gotten this far with(out) all of your support and prayers. Words can't express enough how much she is loved by everyone in our community. The plan is to get her in a pediatric inpatient rehabilitation Center where the LONG road to recovery starts. We thank you so much for your support and continue to keep our family in your prayers.
In a previous update, Freeman wrote that the bullet was lodged in the girl's spine. The round also partially collapsed her lung and tore her liver in half. The girl has endured several surgeries to fix all of the damage it caused, her mother wrote.
Freeman has raised more than $31,000 to pay for her daughter's medical bills through the GoFundMe campaign. The original goal was $20,000.
Detectives arrested a 15-year-old Triangle boy last month in connection with the shooting. Officials charged him with aggravated malicious wounding, attempted malicious wounding, shooting at an occupied vehicle, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and possession of a firearm by a juvenile, police said.
His name was not released because of his age.
